Transportation Benefit District
Transportation Benefit Districts are quasi-municipal corporations with independent taxing authority, including the authority to impose property taxes and impact fees for transportation purposes.

The MRSC website provides a general overview of transportation benefit districts (TBDs) in Washington State. The Town of Wilkeson collects TBD funds when vehicles are licensed and renewed in the State of Washington, in the amount of $20.00 and through sales tax, The most common TBD funding source is a sales and use tax of up to 0.3% (RCW 82.14.0455 and RCW 36.73.040(3)(a)).
The funds collected and pooled at the state level then disturbed to the town to towards roadway and sidewalk improvements.

Wilkeson TBD
Due to increasing traffic safety concerns on Railroad Ave, the council voted to use some TBD funds to conduct a traffic study, looking at the feasibility of installing speed tables. The results are linked in the title above.
At this time, speed tables are not recommended due to noise concerns and commercial vehicles causing excessive wear. We will continue to review all potential avenues to improve safety and decrease speeds on Railroad Ave and throughout Wilkeson. We are still working with our engineers and the traffic consultant to review other options and potential solutions.
